FALL’S FASHIONWe’ve had such a peculiar summer in New England. Most years we miss spring and go from winter to summer, but this year we had spring and then went right to autumn. No lazy, hazy days for us. This meant less sun exposure (a good thing), but no excuse for leaving early on Fridays (a bad thing). However, it’s given me plenty of time to absorb the look for fall and to provide you with the colors to keep you and your clients current. I love the fashion this fall. Designer Peter Som says, Fall is all about rich, eclectic luxury. Uncontrived and unexpected color combinations keep things modern and sexy. For example, wear brightly colored wrap-around neck scarves against a black or grey outfit, ruby red and purple as accents against earth tone neutrals. Create accents by wearing boots or shoes in vibrant shades, or offset neutral clothes with colored hose in bright colors. Opera gloves are in. Imagine a simple black dress with emerald green opera gloves! The unexpected creates style. Glamour reigns this season and antique jewelry is very, very big! Fashion inspiration comes from romantic tapestries, bright gemstones and animal furs –there are some amazing fake ones these days (furs that is, not gemstones). So red and deep plum lipsticks are essential to the look. The smoky eye is still with us but with the addition of a gemstone color somewhere on the lid. Jewel Box perfectly creates this look for you. Makeup is more structured than it has been, so be sure to line the mouth to get a crisp outline. Choose a pencil that matches the lip color, though. Encourage clients to use lip brushes. This not only makes sure that the lines are clean, but also helps lipstick to stay on longer because brushes fill in the lines in lips. With deep lip colors so hot this fall, our new LipColour formula is a real boon since it stays on so much longer than most lipsticks and resists feathering. Think elegant with accents of jewel colors, and you have this fall’s look. Oh, and low-riders are out, out, out and waists are in, in, nipped in! NEW COLLECTIONI hope you enjoy the Fall Makeup Guide enclosed with this letter. The flashcards allow you to send your client home with a permanent guide to the look you’ve created. Colors are more vibrant in these pictures to help her see exactly how to recreate the look. If you’d like more Makeup Guides, we have them in packs of 12. We’ve also given you some suggestions on how to work the new
collection in with our existing palette. So what do we have in store
for you…? Two new PureGloss colours – Black Currant and Apricot Fizz If the intense color of Sophia is too much for you but you want to be in the swim, then Black Currant is your choice. In our usual moisturizing formula, this beautiful gloss can be layered on top of the LipColour or used alone. I love to put Apricot Fizz on top of Nude, Nutmeg or Terra-cotta lip pencils. Then do a smoky eye just using the Black/Brown cream to powder liners and brush Oyster lightly all over it. Two new PurePressed Eye Shadows – Allure and Best Blue Allure is the base shade from Triple Cognac that you’ve been asking me for, and Best Blue is the perfect pale blue. On a monochrome face, use as a liner underneath the lash line to brighten the eye. Four new PurePressed base shades – Ivory, Radiant, Coffee and Riviera Continuing our quest to leave no one out, we’ve added Ivory for those with skins so pale that even Bisque had too much color; Radiant, which is the same value as Warm Sienna but with brown rather than yellow (a perfect match for many Asian skins), and Coffee and Riviera to fill in some gaps in the global shades. Revised duo eye shadows – Now Triples – Dusty Blue/Charcoal and Pecan/Chocolate We’ve added a pale pink base shade to Dusty Blue/CharcoaI, and we’ve put Topaz with Pecan/Chocolate. You’ll be amazed at the difference it’s made. Pecan/ Chocolate is perfect for this season’s bronze smoky eye. SHINE IS NOTABLE BY ITS ABSENCEWe’re so excited about this product! I think it’s going to make a huge difference to your clients with oily skins, your clients whose skins need some smoothing out before applying makeup and to your clients who complain of color change. After all, the interaction of oil and makeup is one of the principle causes of color change. Absence helps with all these challenges by forming an attraction
barrier between the skin and makeup so that makeup can stay on longer,
and skin stays shine-free. If all that isn’t enough, Absence also has a broad spectrum SPF 15. HOLIDAY TREASURES FOR 200424-Karat Gold Mine – Small pots of Gold, Silver, Bronze, Pink, Lilac and Champagne shimmers in one box with the perfect little application brush. All the colors are formulated with our signature food-grade 24-Karat gold. A wonderful tip from makeup artist Mimi Pettibone: pick up Canvas or Petal Lid Primer, dip it into one of the shimmer powders, and use it as an eye shadow. Now that’s elegant! LipKit – Six miniature glosses with a Lip Plumper In a holiday-red case, we’ve packaged your favorite glosses Raspberry, Iced Mocha, Tourmaline, Honey, Cherry Sparkle and Candied Rose in miniature tubes and added a lip plumper. The plumper works with natural ingredients to dilate the blood vessels in the lips. We chose the ingredients to work in a time-release fashion so that when one wears off the other begins to work. The result is puffier lips for longer. NEW COLLECTION DISPLAYWe’ve designed a small display for our new collection, which we’re sure will help you with your sales. Studies have shown that if you display impulse items within eight feet of your checkout desk, you increase the impulse factor. Don’t clutter your checkout area, though. Studies have also shown that when space is limited at the cash wrap, people will buy fewer products. BABY BOOMERSAn interesting article by Mary Lou Quinlan in a recent GCI said that baby boomers (women now in their 50s) are heavier consumers of cosmetics than younger women, and yet the beauty industry looks at these women as a niche at best. She goes on to say: The truth is that women over 40 continue to be the power-house consumers and will continue to be over the next decade. And each year, they are more educated, more affluent and bigger consumers of what you sell. But whatever you do, don’t promise her that you have services and products that will make her look young. She sees herself as younger than you see her anyway. What’s important to her is that she feels vital and respected. Help her with those two things, and you’ll have a customer for life. DID YOU KNOW THAT…?Celebrity dermatologist, Patricia Wexler, recommends shrinking zits with a tiny dab of Preparation H. If redness is more of a problem, she says, squirt on a couple of drops of Visine. For those of you who’ve been looking for aluminum-free deodorants (and who hasn’t?), here’s a tip recommended by my Alternatives newsletter. Mix equal parts of baking soda and cornstarch. Dust under the arms as needed. It’s simple, inexpensive, and it won’t stain your clothes. I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to a bountiful fall and holiday season. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help. Talk to you soon, September 10, 2004 |
